If you plan on doing any sightseeing or dining out in places on the island of Maui other than within walking distance of your own hotel, it is extremely advisable to rent a car. The island does not offer public transportation and very few free shuttles. If you will be renting a car for your entire stay, we recommend renting a vehicle near the airport through which you will be arriving (be sure to indicate the correct airport) and driving to your hotel. Taxi fares from an airport on one side of the island to a hotel on the other side can reach $100. If you just want to sightsee for a day or two, drive to Hana or check out the other side of the island, then you might consider instead, renting a car from an agency near your hotel.

Car rentals are easy from the Kahului International Airport. A short walk to the right from the terminal you will find a long low building with many car rental pick-up stops. Simply jump on the shuttle of the car rental of your choice and in 5-10 minutes ride you'll be there. If you are coming to Maui via the Kapalua Airport, be sure to check the car rental agency closing time. You would hate to be stranded if your rental car is locked up and all the employees have gone home for the day.

Some rental companies forbid travel on the one lanes roads from Kapalua around the west end toward Wailuku and also around the back side of Haleakula. So if either destination is on your schedule be sure to rent a vehicle that is allowed to travel in those parts. If you've come to Maui to surf, there are rental agencies which rent surf vans, too.
