Hana is Maui's remotest tourist town. Located on the back side of the volcano, Haeakala, Hana sits between the edge of a thick rainforest an huge sea cliffs. Everyone has to make the trip to Hana at least once to say they have "survived." The road to Hana offers gorgeous views of the ocean, spectacular waterfalls, colorful tropical flowers, a lush island rainforest and great hiking. The catch? You have to drive around 600 s-shaped curves and across 54 one-lane bridges to see all the splendor. Start early in the day (with lunch, a "Road To Hana" cd, and a full tank of gas) so that you'll have time to spend in Hana. Don't forget to stop Hasagawa's General Store. Should you decide to continue on past Hana, you'll find Charles Lindbergh's grave in Kipahulu and Oheo Gulch, home of the "Seven Sacred Pools." It's not sacred nor are there seven pools but it is a great place to swim and spend an afternoon.
